Weekly Session 3

Q After watching this week’s videos, I noticed the following themes in common with week 2’s discussion. Firstly, we can see an over exaggeration of the characters of the black men in the musical comedy. We can also say they are portrayed in an uncivilized manner as seen in the way they are presented as clumsy and rowdy individuals in the silent play. Even when they decided to start up their own show, they are still unable to succeed at it and I relate that to the idea from last week’s material that black people are not worthy of freedom or able to stand on their own. We can also notice Oscar Micheaux’s films challenging racism and relate that with Du Bois ideology that black theatre should be by black people and for black people for there to be accurate and dignified representation of the black race. Overall, I think all the videos and reading materials in this class thus far show the evolution of black theatre over the years and the challenges that came with it.
